چکیده

We carefully assessed thyroid status and goiter by ultrasound in 1411 subjects virtually representing the entire resident population of Pescopagano, an iodine-deficient village of Southern Italy. Median urinary iodine excretion was 55 microg/L. The prevalence of goiter was 16.0% in children and 59.8% in adults. Thyroid nodularity was 0.5% in children and progressively increased with age to 28.5% in the 56- to 65-yr-old group. The prevalence of present or past hyperthyroidism was 2.9%, including 9 cases with toxic diffuse goiter and 20 with toxic nodular goiter. Functional autonomy was rare in children, progressively increased with age up to 15.4% in the elderly, and was related to nodular goiter. The prevalences of overt and subclinical hypothyroidism in the adults were 0.2% and 3.8%, respectively. Serum autoantibodies to thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase were detected in 12.6% of the entire population. The prevalence of diffuse autoimmune thyroiditis was 3.5%, being very low in children. Thyroid cancer was found in only 1 case. In conclusion, in the present survey of an iodine-deficient community, a progressive increase with age of goiter prevalence, thyroid nodularity, and functional autonomy was observed. Hyperthyroidism was twice as high as that reported in iodine-sufficient areas, mainly due to an increased frequency of toxic nodular goiter. Although low titer serum thyroid antibodies were relatively frequent, the prevalences of both overt and subclinical autoimmune hypothyroidism were not different from those observed in iodine-sufficient areas.

Normal Thyroid Function Tests Following Discontinuation of Levothyroxine in Hypothyroid Iodine Deficient Individuals

SUMMARY In 28 school children with primary hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency, 100 µg levothyroxine (L-T4} was administered for nine weeks and resulted in normalization of serum T4, T3, and TSH. Five months after withdrawal of L-T 4 , thyroid function was normal in the majority of subjects. Serum T4 was 8.6±2.3 µg/dl ; T3, 156±2.3 ng/dl; and TSH, 6.9± 12.7 µU/ml. Only one subjects showed ...

The effects of fenvalerate on hepatic and cerebral xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes in selenium and/or iodine deficient rats

Objective(s): Particularly in developing countries, selenium and/or iodine deficiencies are encountered and use of pesticides in agriculture are not well-controlled. Fenvalerate is a pyrethroid insectide used in agriculture and has applications against a wide range of pests. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of fenvalerate on hepatic and cerebral xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme act...

مقایسه دفع ادراری ید در خانم های حامله همراه با گواتر و خانم های حامله بدون گواتر و نوزادانشان

Iodine availability for the maternal thyroid is reduced during pregnancy as a result of the loss of the nutrient by increased renal clearance, and competition by the fetoplacental unit. So with a marginal iodine intake, pregnancy constitutes a stimulus for both the maternal and fetal thyroids. On the other hand, iodine deficiency in the first trimester of pregnancy results in impaired developme...

Inm-7: Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy

A normal pregnancy results in a number of important physiological and hormonal changes that alter thyroid function. These changes mean that laboratory tests of thyroid function must be interpreted with caution during pregnancy. Levels of thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) and production of T3 and T4 hormones and the daily requirement of iodine in pregnancy are increased to 50%, TSH receptor stimu...

Concentration of serum total iodine and thyroid hormones in Holstein cows in central Iran

The aim of this study was to evaluate total iodine, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) status in the blood serum of Holstein cows on six farms in central Iran. Total iodine, T3 and T4 concentrations were measured in 90 blood serum samples (15 per farm). Mean concentrations of total iodine (38.80 ± 1.52 µg/l) and T3 (1.57 ± 0.10 nmol/l) were lower but the mean concentration of T4 (45.60 ± ...
